Welcome to the official website for National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM)!
Important Update on This Year's Event.
September 1, 2008
September is widely recognized as the most dangerous month for college students. Nicknamed the “The Red Zone” for its high incidence of sexual assaults, this time period sees a culmination of several factors which create the perfect storm for violent crime.
With parties aplenty, it’s a great time to meet new people, make new friends, and for students to find their place in the community. But it’s also the time violent crimes are most likely to occur – when students let their guard down, or are drinking, and are among strangers. In fact, 95-percent of violent campus crimes are alcohol or drug-related.
This summer, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously approved a resolution designating September National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM). National Security on Campus, a non-profit (501(c)(3)) organization whose mission is to prevent violence, substance abuse and other crimes in college and university campus communities nationwide, created NCSAM in 2005.
More than 350 colleges and universities nationwide will participate in the fourth annual (NCSAM) this September with the goal of educating students about the dangers of the college campus and what they can do about it.
